Background: Romans was written from Corinth during his 3rd Missionary Journey The gentiles by the law of nature, nor the Jews by the law of Moses, could obtain justification before God, both have to seek it from the free mercy of God by faith. God has an absolute right to show mercy on whatever terms he pleases, or to withhold it from whoever, again, as He pleases.Review from Romans 1:1-17We are called to be saints

We should be concerned about the welfare of each other

Being pure in character is not a bad thing

We are to have a reputation for faith beyond our own borders

Having a relationship with Jesus is nothing to be ashamed about

Our lifestyle should reflect a relationship with Jesus

Now then, continuing on in Romans chapter 1

1. The Basis of Universal Guilt (1:18-23)

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities -his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

2. The Results of Guilt (1:24-32)

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Summary: The world is in the condition it is by choice.

1. God shows himself to everyone, and holds everyone accountable

2. He Lets us Choose what to Believe

3. Appropriate results have followed our historical choices

Introduction and Background - Romans was written from Corinth during his 3rd Missionary Journey. He faced, on a regular basis, the task of confronting important issues of his day, or ANY day.

Believing his time on earth was drawing to a close, Paul decided to reduce to writing the ultimate question…. in a systematic fashion, the foundations of the faith, leading to a path of maturity, and what the process might look like.

His chief design is to show that neither the gentiles by the law of nature, nor the Jews by the law of Moses, could obtain justification before God and that it was necessary for both to seek it from the free mercy of God by faith… and that God has an absolute right to show mercy on whatever terms he pleases, or to withhold it from whoever, again, as He pleases.

The Letter to the Romans has 5 major themes:

I. The Revealing of Righteousness (1:1-32)

II. Justification & The Imputing of Righteousness (1:18––5:11)

III. Sanctification: &The Imparting of Righteousness (5:12––8:39)

a. The Inability of the Flesh and the Law to Sanctify (7:1-25)

b. The Power of the Spirit to Sanctify (8:1-17)

IV. The Vindication of God’’s Righteousness (9:1––11:36)

a. God’’s Past Dealings with Israel (9:1-33)

b. God’’s Present Dealings with Israel (10:1-21)

c. God’’s Future Dealings with Israel (11:1-33)

V. Applying God’s Righteousness (12:1––15:13)

VI. Blazing Righteousness from Paul’s Perspective (15:14––16:27)

It should be note that the word for “Saints” as used in Paul’s opening remarks is hagios… Pronounced: hag’-ee-os; sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, consecrated): most holy; holy one; or holy thing.

At the time of Paul’s writing to the Romans, their society was not unlike the American environment today. Where once where Rome’s might had been a force for good in the world, a unifying factor, the power and leadership had become corrupt. Immorality, homosexuality, and base appetites were promoted. The Christian religion was frowned upon, and eventually became a crime, punishable by death.

Paul’s opening remarks of encouragement serve as a model to us to be committed to the establishing, encouraging, and recognition of each other’s faith. Many in Rome were suffering persecution and experiencing varying levels of crisis. It was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain their equilibrium in such a degenerate environment… but they were committed to Christ regardless of the circumstances. Paul commends them on this.

Eventually through the remainder of the book, Paul will lay out a systematic, logical progression in the case for the state and condition of man, why both gentiles and Jews are under God’s judgement, What pleases God, what He has done to take care of the condition, and how it plays out in life. By no means will this be an exhaustive series, but having said that, here are a few principles and observations from the first 16 verses from chapter one:

Observations from Romans 1:1-17

1. We should be concerned about the welfare of each other

2. Being pure in character is not a bad thing

3. Our reputation for faithfulness and integrity should touch others beyond our own borders

4. Having a relationship with Jesus is nothing to be ashamed about

5. Our lifestyle should reflect a relationship with Jesus

Proverbs 11:14 reveals that “… without counsel, the people perish.” We have noted before the Law of Improbable Distribution that states, “Whatever it is that hits the fan will probably not be distributed evenly.” So true in many of our lives.

There are many theaters of crisis. Any one, alone, may destroy our equilibrium, yet reviewing the “Job Syndrome” we can see that trouble usually arrives with company.

Like us, Job had to contend with:

a. Family Problems: His children were reported killed.

b. Economic Problems: He lost the wealth from his farming and ranching.

c. Social Problems: His friends, even his wife, condemned him

d. Physical Problems: Boils

e. Spiritual Problems: Warfare, Deception

In modern terms and application it might look something like:

a. Family Dysfunction, Various forms of Abuse, Divorce, Separation, Abandonment, Adultery

b. Over extended Credit, Bankruptcy, Layoffs or Takeovers, Working Spouses, even Outsourcing

c. Non-Conformity, Peer Pressure, Prejudice, Persecution, Slander, Gossip

d. Deteriorating Health, Allergies, Injuries, Disease, or even Reactions to Medications

e. Depression, Stress, Suicidal Thoughts, Delusions, Hallucinations, Paranoia

When times get rough, the smart thing to do is get outside, objective, balanced, and honest assistance. Get counseling. There are some considerations, though… Beware:

The “Charlatan” - Those who prey on others misfortunes for their own profit or praise. They provide superficial help for long term commitment to keep you in their debt. Even if they have a few gems of wisdom, they’ll dole it out for more than it is worth.

The “Amateur” - Even if they have a desire to help, they do not have the depth, of the correct skill set for see you through to the end. This, too, can cost you more than you can afford to lose. You do not go to an auto mechanic if you really need a physician.

The”Overkill” - some things may not be “broken” and do not need fixed. The “Overkill” wants to do an extreme make-over of your entire life.

In Luke 2:52 Jesus as a young lad after spending time in Jerusalem talking with the spiritual leaders of his day, became obedient to his parents and increased in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man. In our application in today’s time it might look like this:

Wisdom - Growing Mentally - Psychologically Balanced

Stature - Growing Physically - Adopted a Healthy Lifestyle and Medical Advice to reject addictive behaviors

Favor with God - Growing Spiritually - Pastoral Counsel

Favor with Man - Socially - Becoming an honest, solid, citizen

When it hits the fan, have friend, extended family, and sound counsel to partner with you to help you navigate through the mire. Eccl 4:9-10 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!”

Lest you think that pastors and church leadership do not struggle, consider the following from the Apostle… I Cor. 1:8-11 “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

And again in Gal 6:1-2 “Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Then we have this instruction in James 5:17-20 “Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”

So what good can getting counsel do?

Prov 1:5 “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance”

Prov 9:9 “Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning”

Prov 11:14 “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure”

Prov 12:15 “The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.”

Prov 15:22 “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed”

Prov 19:20 “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise”

Prov 20:18 “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance”

The believer, if diligent enough, will grow in wisdom and discernment by adhering to the principles proceeding from the Word of God

Charlie’s Passing

We have all been praying the past few days with a good friend and ministry partner Allen Thompson, who experienced the passing of a close friend and co-worker. Pastor George in Kenya and others have lost friends and ministry partners and children under his care as well due to the recent violonce, and previous circumstances. Sometimes we ask “Why this, why me, why now?” All difficult questions to answer. Hopefully our responses and comfort are not shallow, unsympathetic, or irrelevant.

John 3:7-8 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

We feel it when it’s upon us, and after it’s gone, where did it go? More and more we need to be instant in season, walking in His presence, moving by His Spirit, and living in His grace. He has not changed since He came to live in us, and make us new. He is as mysterious now as He was then, 2000 years ago… as powerful now as then… as intense now as then… We sometimes forget that He walked through crowds and never touched a one… and at other times touched whole cities. Sometimes he spend hours explaining things to his chosen, and other times kept His own counsel and walked in silence. Yet in all things, life and passing are at His decree. We see through a glass darkly, only then shall we see face to face and know as we are known. ‘Till then we “wing-it” as we follow Him.

May we be more aware of His coming, experience His moving in the present, and live with gratitude, anticipation, and hope for our futures .

We need to continue to pray for Jane (Charlie’s wife) and her son Eric (20 yr old in college) as they navigate through these hard times, and their friends and extended family.

Fellowship

So far we’ve covered:

Matt 5-7 Sermon on the Mount (1. It’s About What You Think; 2. It’s About Who You Are; 3. It’s About What You Do

Direction from Hebrews 5:11-6:3 ; 1. Time “Should” Bring Maturity (Grow up vs Grow old); 2. Maturity “Should” Produce Wisdom; 3. Maturity “Should” Make Better Choices

Hindrances To Maturity: Confusion, Chaos, Contamination, Cowardice, Conceit, and Comparison Care For Others

We covered Principles Concerning Wisdom: 1. Wisdom is Available to those who want it; 2. Wisdom is Refuse-able to those who don’t want it; 3. Suitable Consequences will follow your choice

We then decided to travel through 5 Methods for Growing

Tongues / Interpretation Language not learned by the speaker for proof of the gospel, to give worship and praise, and to pray

So-o-o-o then, let’s continue with IV. Assemble Together In Fellowship

As you recall, in the book of Acts, 2:42-47 the Jewish converts from the preaching on the Day of Pentecost devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Anointed apostolic ministry produced awe in the people, affirmed by miracles.

Though they continued to meed in the temple courts every day, they ate their meals together in homes, and even spent time living having things in “common”. Here are some of the contributing factors:

Political Persecution: It was becoming dangerous for followers of Jesus to walk the streets. Jewish rebellion against the  Roman oppression didn’t die with the trial and death of Jesus. Barabus and others like him were still a threat.

Religious Persecution: Jewish leaders didn’t want to continue to have Jesus’ reputation slandered against them, this is why Saul was eventually commissioned to bring converted Jews captive back to Jerusalem to trial.

Economic Persecution and Financial Constraints: Economically, there were several thousand converts who were not native to the area. Although Jews, they were foreign visitors on the day of their conversion, confirmed by the numbers of tongues spoken when the Holy Spirit fell (Acts 2:5-11). They had not planned on staying permanently, but after the kind of encounter they experienced at the hands of the apostles, how could they leave? They had been changed forever. The kind of ministry, teaching, experience they witnessed firsthand was not available back home, so they made a brave, bold, decision. They stayed and continued learning from the apostles.

Local believers opened and offered their homes to the new converts for fellowship and lodging. As “hotel” or “Inn” accommodations would quickly deplete budgeted travel funds for those who could not take advantage of this king of offer, they wrote home to close their accounts, selling their lands, homes, and other interests and donated the monies to the apostles for distribution to those in need (Acts 4:32-36).

If the scholars are correct, the average home housed almost 50 believers. As the integrity of the family is key in God’s plan, many of those who were offered lodging were entire families and friends.

The locals who opened their homes served a few functions. It not only kept families together, but kept them off of the danger of the streets. It also provided shelter from an unstable political climate. Remember, this is the same environment that was hostile to Jesus and had Him sacrificed.

Fellowship vs Preaching and Teaching - Normally, a preaching and teaching environment is uni-directional. The speaker talks/teaches, the others listen and, hopefully, learn. Question and answer periods are ineffective due to the quantity of questions and the time to answer them all.

In Fellowship, the time constraints are more relaxed as well as the atmosphere for discussion. The numbers of people involved are fewer, and more participation is encouraged. Even topics for discussion may be freer as some things may be inappropriate for a larger crowd or public discussion. Some things are of a personal or sensitive matter where a smaller group offers more intimacy, safety, and accountability.

Small groups are a way for us to make the connections we need with fellow believers. Small group fellowships, whether focused on Bible studies or on a wide variety of activities, can have a tremendous impact on those who participate. Here are some reasons why small groups make such a difference:

People talk more in small groups. - People in a small group, whether based in a home or in the church, are more likely to participate in discussions than in a large class. Since there are fewer people, there is more opportunity to talk and less room to hide. Jesus and the disciples had some of the most revealing and interesting conversations and situations away from the crowds.

Group members realize that others face similar problems. - People often think there is something uniquely wrong with them. When they hear that others have similar struggles, they feel relieved and encouraged.

People use their gifts and talents to minister to one another. -God doesn’t expect pastors and teachers to do all the ministering. He has given each of us gifts and talents to encourage, teach and challenge one another. Small groups provide the perfect setting for Christians to minister one to another. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24).

Small group members encourage each other in their faith.  -We strengthen each other’s faith. In his letter to the Romans, Paul taught us that when we see the faith in another believer, it encourages us in our own faith. “… that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith” (Romans 1:12).

Small group members encourage each other to grow. - Regardless of a group’s focus or format, after a while people are likely to share personal insights and testimonies. When people share, others see new ways they can draw closer to God and new steps they can take with others. Changing is hard. There is nothing like a word of encouragement when someone feels hopeless or discouraged. Group members support one another, both during meetings and outside them. We can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God (2 Corinthians 1:4).

Group members hold each other accountable. - If someone announces he or she plans to work on making a change, other members of the group may ask how it went the next time they get together. This can be done in a friendly, informal way. Or group members may make a plan to be accountable to each other. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). Likewise, when people know they will be meeting with a small group of friends, they are motivated to do their homework and memorize the weekly Bible verse.

Members pray for one another. - God honors and answers prayer. When people become connected emotionally, they are more open to praying for one another. Often, group members exchange prayer requests or become prayer partners. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them (Matthew 18:20).

People are more likely to practice what they learn. - For all the above reasons, members of a small group are more likely to apply what they learn than those in a large class.

Group members can help each other in hard times. -People often feel isolated, alone or abandoned when facing grave health, emotional or financial problems. Small group members can provide a “safety net,” supporting one another in hard times. I call this the Principle of Improbable distribution… “Whatever it is that hits the fan, will probably not be distributed evenly.” (II Cor 3-11)

Friendships Start. - Many people, including Christians, lack close friends. When people get together in a small group, close friendships form and often remain long after the group ends.

Summary: There is a time and place for public, formal, corporate ministry, but it is incomplete . . . Public forums teach theory but small group fellowship is better for personal, practical application and practice. We need both.

Tongues / Interpretation

Tongues / Interpretation: A language not learned by the speaker for proof of the gospel, to give worship and praise, and to pray.

1st Cor. 14:1-5 (1) Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. (2) For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. (3) But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. (4) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. (5) I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

1st Cor. 14:6-12 (6) Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? (7) Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? (8)Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? (9) So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. (10) Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. (11) If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. (12)So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

1st Cor. 14:13-17 (13) For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. (14) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. (15) So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. (16) If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? (17) You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

1st Cor. 14:18-25 (18) I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. (19) But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. (20) Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. (21) In the Law it is written: “Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me,” says the Lord. (22) Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. (23) So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? (24) But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, (25) and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

1st Cor. 14:26-33a (26) What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. (27) If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three - should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. (28) If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. (29) Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. (30) And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. (31) For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. (32) The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. (33) For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

1st Cor. 14:33b- As in all the congregations of the saints, (34) women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. (35) If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. (1st cor 11:13-16)

(36) Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? (37) If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. (38) If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.

(39) Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. (40) But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

Tower of Bable - Genesis 11:1-9 “Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

“But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel - because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.”

Isaiah 28:9-12 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.”

Kinds of Tongues:

Speech of Men from the Tower of Babel (Acts 2:1-41)

Speech of Angels (no references other than 1st Cor 13:1)

Speech of our Spirit (Rom 8:26) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

What it Is Not:

1. Not the Ability to Learn Foreign Languages

2. Not Just Putting Away a Filthy Mouth

3. Not a Sign of Maturity or Immaturity

Speaking in tongues CANNOT BE the SIGN of the Holy Ghost’s complete in-filling because the Corinthian church spoke in tongues and Paul said that these people were “yet carnal” because there was “envying and strife and divisions” among them. 1 Cor 3:1-3 and Paul spoke in tongues… more than them all

     3:2-4 they were yet carnal

     5:1 they were fornicators

     5:2 they were puffed up

6:7-8 full of strife and contention

6:7-8 they did wrong and defrauded their own brethren

11:18 they had divisions among them

     11:19 they held false doctrines

11:20-34 they ate and drank the Lord’s supper unworthily

     15:12 some denied the resurrection

4. Not a False Gift. Paul affirmed their authenticity regardless of the Corinthian immorality.

5. Not of the Devil either. Again, Paul recognized and afirmed the source and the use.

6. Not Something to Be Forbidden in Church

7. Not a Sign of Emotionalism

8. Not Magnifying Self Acts 10:46 “For they heard them speak with tongues and MAGNIFY GOD.”

APPLICATION - Tongues can be a “Multidirectional Gift”

The gift of tongues may be used:

to witness (Acts 2) Man to Man - Horizontal

to pray (1Cor 14:2) Man to God - Ascending

to sing (1Cor 14:15) Man to God - Ascending

to give thanks (1Cor 14:16-17) Man to God - Ascending

and to praise the Lord (Acts 10:46). Man to God - Ascending

Tongues with interpretation is equal to prophecy (1Cor 14:5) God to Man - Descending

Prophecy - God to Man - Descending

METHOD: Tongues is a free will gift. God doesn’t force anyone to speak in tongues. It is received by faith and stirred up by an act of the will.

1st Cor 12:1-11 What the gifts are

1st cor 13:1-3 What your attitude should be as you exercise them.

1st Cor 14: What it looks like when you do.

Dynamics of the gift

1st Tim 4:14 states that a person can NEGLECT a spiritual gift.

2nd Tim 1:6 states that a person can STIR UP a spiritual gift.

1st Cor 14:32 states that the spirits of the prophets ARE SUBJECT to the prophets.

1st Cor 14:1 we are to desire this gift and seek it

God does not tease His people. He doesn’t tell us to “desire” something and then refuse to give what He has told us to desire.

By the way… Jesus spoke in tongues: Mat 27:46

Discerning of Spirits

What it is not:

Suspicion - The gift of discerning of spirits is not simply being suspicious of others. A person who has never had the Holy Spirit can be suspicious of everyone, and often they are.

Criticism - This gift is not discerning of faults, but of spirits. It is the spirit of the devil which causes people to accuse the brethren. The devil is called the Accuser of the Brethren in the book of Revelation. (Rev 12:10)

Discernment - This gift is not simply the ability to discern things, it is the gift of discerning OF SPIRITS. Most anyone can discern different colors, shapes, and sizes of things, but it takes a supernatural gift from God to discern spirits.

Spiritualist - This gift is not to be confused with spiritualist, which is condemned in the Scriptures. The spirits of our dead relatives are not floating around in our houses or in the air outside. They are either with Jesus, or someplace else.

What it is - the ability given by the Holy Spirit to see into the spirit realm for angel/demon identification of sources of blessing/trouble

Application - This gift can show the kinds of spirits/angels which are working in and with people today; such as unclean spirits, deaf and dumb spirits, demonic spirits, oppressing spirits, or even the Holy Spirit.

This gift is a requirement for all who are used of God in a deliverance ministry. Without it, those who seek to minister deliverance are simply left guessing at whether or not a demonic spirit is actually present and if so, what type of demonic spirit.

This gift is also a requirement of all those who operate in a prophetic ministry, for without it they would not be able to sit by and judge the prophesies of others as they are called to do (1Cor 14:29)

Purpose - This gift is given to keep the church safe from demonic presence and practices.

A few eamples from the life of Jesus . .

The legion of demons Mark 5:1-20

Exorcism of a boy Mark 9:14-29

O.T. Rules and Examples:

Lev 20:27 “A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.’ ”

1 Chron 10:13 “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance…”

2 Chron 33:1-6 He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger…”

1 Kings 22:1-39 Micaiah the son of Imlah before the king and his false prophets discerned the true source of their prophesies.

N.T. Examples:

Matt 10:1 - He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

Mark 6:6-13 He sent out the 12, in pairs of two, and gave them power to heal and discern spirits for deliverance.

Acts 5:1-10 Ananias and Sapphira “Nuff said”

Acts 13 6-10 Barjesus sought to turn away Sergius Paulus from the faith. Then Paul, FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST, set his eyes on him and said, O full of all subtlety and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?” But, Paul first discerned that this evil spirit was there before he spoke.

Acts 16:1-5 Paul had a dream, and discerned that it was from the Holy Spirit, not otherwise.

Acts 16:16-18 Paul discerned it was a spirit of divination. Even though she spoke”truely” Instead of making her one of the charter members of the church, Paul cast the demon out of her. Please notice that Paul didn’t take her into a special deliverance service and ask her all about her history, he just had a gift of discerning of spirits from the Holy Spirit to know that she had a demon and he cast it out of her that same moment.

Acts 8:23 Peter and the sorcerer. Philip let one man be baptized without discerning the evil spirit that was still in the man. But when Peter started to pray for him he discerned it and said, “For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness and the bond of iniquity,” (Acts 8:23). Simon had believed with his mind, was baptized and converted by Philip, but his heart was not right with God. If more of us had the gift of discerning of spirits in our churches, there would be a lot less churches which have people with perverse spirits and hearts full of wickedness. They would have to change their hearts as well as their minds if they wanted to hang around the church.

The Gift of Prophecy

What it Isn’t. . .

It Isn’t Fortune Telling - When I was in 5th grade, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Shortly afterwards, a book was written about Jeanne Dixon entitled, “THE GIFT OF PROPHECY.” It claimed that she supposed ability to tell the future. Her “accuracy” rate is far from stellar.

Deut.13:1-4 ” If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.”

It Isn’t the Ability to Preach - Many popular preachers on numerous radio stations claim that the gift of prophecy is the gift of being able to preach the gospel. To preach means to proclaim, to announce, to cry to tell. Prophecy is not skilled oratory. Politicians, lawyers, teachers, business leaders, and motivational speakers have oratorical ability even though they have never received the Holy Spirit. There is nothing supernatural about oratorical ability. This skill can be obtained through education and training, and practice. Prophecy only comes through the Holy Spirit. Period. Prophecy is a supernatural gift, whereas oratorical ability is a natural gift at best.

It Isn’t the Ability to Quote Scripture - Certainly, scriptural principles and even a biblical reference may be a part of a prophecy. However, the gift of prophecy should never be confused with the natural ability some people who have the ability, training to remember and quote Scripture. . . Even the devil can quote Scriptures.

It Isn’t the Laying On of Hands and Saying Whatever Comes to Mind - One of the greatest abuses of this gift is the practiced routine of going around laying hands on everyone in a church or prayer meeting and then saying whatever comes to mind. Many have been taught that this is the gift of prophecy. Not. It is not the Holy Spirit’s gift of prophecy.

It Isn’t the Gift of Suspicion -Unsubstantiated opinion, fears, conviction, or opinions stated as being from God , or by claiming that the deliverer of the message was given a divine revelation and insight about that person or situation does not make it so. I have seen women being told that their husbands were running around on them. The rest of the group was so sure about this that they even conjectured who they might be running around with. When the angry wives went home and confronted their husbands concerning this supposed sin in their lives, it almost destroyed their marriages. They were innocent, but it took a great deal of prayer, counsel, and explanation to finally convince their wife of their innocence. Often they “prophesy” that many magnificent spiritual events will happen in their lives, and that God will move mightily in their midst… things which never come to pass. This is not the Biblical gift of prophecy.

What IS the Gift of Prophecy? It is speaking under the inspiration of God for the “edification, exhortation, and comfort” of a specific individual, a group of people, a church, a community, state, or a country.

From the Hebrew language, the word for prophecy means “to flow forth” or “to spring forth.” It carries the intonation of bubbling forth like a fountain. The Greek word for prophecy literally means to “speak for another” . . . to be the spokesman for someone else. Literally it means to speak for God or to be His mouthpiece to speak a blessing or judgement or reveal future events.

Prophesy always exalts Jesus as the only Savior of men (Rev 19:10).

It is for women as well as for men (1Cor 11; Acts 2:15-16).

It is to be “desired” (1Cor 14:1).

It always agrees with God’s Word. 1 Cor 14:3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. (NIV)

To prophecy is to speak for God as His mouthpiece. It is probably better to speak in the second or third person when one prophecies so that it can be more easily judged by those who are sitting by (1Cor 14:29). It is also preferable that the person who prophecies should stand up in reverance to God when he or she is prophesying. Prophecy is for women as well as men according to the Scriptures. It is for all spirit-filled believers (1Cor 11, Acts 2:15-16, Joel 2, Luke 1, 1Cor 14:1,24,31).

Some Old Testament Examples

The Spirit of God came upon Eldad and Medad in Numbers 11 and they prophesied Numbers 11:25-29

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Saul (who was later to become king) and he prophesied while he was still just a farm boy. 1 Sam 10:9-11

Moses was a prophet, King David was also a prophet, there were numerous prophets in the Old Testament, there were so many that there is not room enough here to list all of them and their deeds. Elijah and Elisha were powerful prophets of God who did mighty exploits for Him. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel were all prophets of God who wrote the books which bear their names. Then there were also 12 minor prophets who’s writings make up the last 12 books of the O.T. from Hosea to Malachi.

Some New Testament Examples (This is not an exhaustive list)

Jesus prophesied about His death Matt 16:21

Jesus prophesied about the End times Matt 24:1-2

The Prophets in Antioch affirmed the calling of Barnabas & Paul Acts 13:1-3

Paul preached to the disciples of John the Baptist. After baptism, Paul laid hands on them and they began to speak in tongues and prophesy. Acts 19:4-6

Agabus prophesied of Paul being bound with his belt if he went to Jerusalem Acts 21:7-8

Philip had four daughters who prophesied. Acts 21:10-11

I Thes 5:19-22 “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.”

The Gift of Miracles

For the record, the gifts of the Holy Spirit as recorded in 1st Cor 12:1-11 are temporary. Temporary not in that they have passed away, but temporary that when the need for the specific instance of their expression is concluded, The expression of the gift is over… the person is not that gift 24/7. God may use someone to heal, but that does not make them a healer. All may teach, but not all are teachers, all may prophesy, but all are not prophets. God may use you to work a miracle, but that does not make you a miracle worker forever. (1 Cor 12:29)

The result of the expression of these gifts were to bring about conviction of sin, repentance from that sinful practice or behavior, instruction in righteousness, direction in life, purpose in performance, and commitment in character.

What the Gift of Miracles is not… Natural Science: The gift of the working of miracles is not what some call “miracles of science.” Natural science is a natural man using natural intellect to deal with natural laws. Natural wisdom is foolishness when compared to God’s wisdom. Science is not the evil enemy, science just follows the Laws of Nature and Physics. Science can be observed, recorded, measured, and reproduced in a controlled environment. The gift of the working of miracles is not what some call “miracles of science.” Natural science is a natural man using natural intellect to deal with natural laws. Not a Wonder of Nature: According to scientists, the bumble bee should not fly due to aerodynamics, size and weight related to thrust and lift ratios… but it does. This is not a miracle… a wonder, yes, marvelous yes, but a miracle? No. According to scientists, the bumble bee should not fly due to aerodynamics, size and weight related to thrust and lift ratios… but it does. Not a Surprise: Often, when modern church buildings, college buildings, hospital buildings, school buildings, etc. are completed, someone will say, “It’s a miracle of God.” However, a building in and of itself is not a miracle. It may be surprising that it was ever completed. It may be surprising that it turned out decent and usable. It may be surprising that it was completed… early and under budget to boot! But, such things can also be produced by natural sinners who fight against God’s miracle working power.

Not Medical and Surgical Skills: The medical industry has progressed beautifully in the number of things that can be treated. From toe nail fungus, to hair loss, all manner of injuries, ailments, and maladies can be treated with pharmaceutical and holistic approaches. From Chiropractic methods, acupuncture, and surgery, pain can be eradicated, bones reset, and posture restored… within limits and not without scars or marks. This is not supernatural. Doctors who do not even know God can possess modern surgical skills. The medical industry has progressed beautifully in the number of things that can be treated. What It Is: The Gift of Miracles is God’s deviation from the set natural laws he set in motion in order to demonstrate His Provision, his Deliverance, and/or His Salvation.

It is Signs and Wonders: The working of miracles is signs and wonders. Mk. 16:17-20 “… And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”It is always supernatural and contrary to nature. It is used to confirm the Word of God preached by God’s servants. God works miracles to build faith in Him.

John 5:36 (NASV) “But the witness which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me

John 10:25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.

Even if you do no miracle, it does not mean God’s word is not true. When God called Gideon, Gideon asked God, “If I am a mighty man of valor where are all the miracles?” . . . This was why Moses asked God to be with him to perform miracles. . . This is why Elisha asked, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”. . . This is why God told Joshua, “As I was with Moses so I will be with thee.” This is why we do the same things Jesus did and take up the work He left off.

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Miracles Accomplish God’s Divine Will : Miracles are performed to deliver people in danger, to perform judgments upon those who interfere with His work, to calm storms, to cast out devils, to bind up broken hearts, to deliver the captives, and to deliver people from natural stubbornness and rebellion so they may receive the Holy Ghost. Miracles enable people to be saved. Denying miracles is an affront to God’s reputation and character.

Healing

Some believe, some do not. Some accept, some do not. Is the gift of healing appropriate for today? The depends upon who you ask. The gift Healing is God’s intervention through the hands of his servants to restore a physical, spiritual, and/or mental condition. In fellowship with Brother Galen, he confirms with me that the scripture teaches that there are 7 types of healing:

1. The Body is able to Self-Heal. Example? Fever. This kind of manifestation is where things have gone awry with the body, maybe even including or minor injuries such as cuts, bruises and fatigue. Given proper rest, diet and care, the body functions as God designed it, it will recover without divine intervention. Jesus still heals this kind of infirmity quickly, with no scars or ill after affects. as in the case of Peter’s mother-in-law. Mark 1:29-34

2. The Body is Unable to Self Heal. Examples are such maladies as being deaf, blind, or lame. Jesus can and does restore fully anyway. Mark 7:31-37

3. The Miraculous healing such as in the case of the Leper, or the quadrapalegic. Not only does he stop the progression of the disease or injury, but He makes them whole. In the case of the leper, with eaten flesh, He replaces that which was gone… is it no wonder they praised Him so loud? Mark 1:40-45

4. Re-animation Healing. One word… Lazarus. There are others, but this is huge! Being raised from the dead…  Restored life! It ain’t no secret what Jesus can do! John 11:1-44

5. Emotional Healing. Those with life long scars, old tapes that get played in our minds, mental instability. Jesus renews our mind, clams our spirit, and as King david prayed… He renews a right spirit within us, breaks up the fallow ground in our hearts. Luke 4:18

6. Spiritual Possesion/oppression. The bound slave is freed! Cleansed! Delivered! Mark 7:24-30

7. Salvation. Eternal translation from the kingdom of darkness to Light. Being reborn of the Spirit of the Holy One! We become a New Creation. Savior Makes Us Forever Sinless . II Cor. 5:17
